At a glance
Take on an apprentice who works in your business 4 to 5 days a week and trains at an MITD centre one day a week toward a National Trade Certificate. You pay only a monthly allowance set at 50% of the minimum wage in year one (60% in a two-year apprenticeship); MITD delivers the theory training free.
The National Apprenticeship Programme lets you grow your own skilled worker at a reduced cost. The apprentice spends most of the week working in your business and one day at an MITD training centre, building toward a recognised National Trade Certificate.
What you get: you pay the apprentice only a set allowance, fixed at 50% of the minimum wage for a one-year apprenticeship or 60% for a two-year one, and MITD provides the theory training for free. Under the National Apprenticeship Programme the National Empowerment Foundation may also co-fund the allowance.
This suits trades and hands-on roles where you would rather train someone to your standards than hire ready-made. At the end you have a certified worker who already knows your business.
To take part, register as an approved employer with MITD and apply at the start of an intake (commonly January, July and August).
Watch out for this
Watch out: MITD does not refund you in cash. Your saving comes from paying a sub-minimum-wage allowance and getting free certified training, so plan the budget around that rather than a reimbursement.
